History
In 1985, the United Nations approved the guidelines, for the protection of the consumer. One of those guidelines is the ‘education of the consumer’. The buying of goods, the use of services, the promotion of attitudes and skills that are needed in every day life, all of these constitute a kaleidoscope of subjects for which information and education is required. Only through education can consumers acquire a critical approach to the modern world’s ever changing circumstances.
The School of Adult Consumer Education of the Cyprus Consumers Association was founded in 1990. Today there are branches in all the towns of Cyprus.
Oblectives
The vision of the School is to offer as many interested consumers as possible, men, women and children alike, specific information, knowledge and skills, which will permit them to exercise a reasonable choice among the goods and services, offered on the market, which are most suited to their desire and economic interest. It also considers their concerns with hygiene, safety, food and health and the environment. It offers them knowledge regarding the existing laws of consumer protection as well as their rights and responsibilities.
The Cyprus Consumers’ Association runs the School without any financial aid either from the Government or any other individual or organization. They provide the premises, furniture, visual aids and leaflet preparation. They also provide a member of the Association’s Committee to organize, supervise and co-ordinate. Co-ordination is needed for the implementation of the programme for the school in Nicosia, its braches in Limassol, Larnaca and Dherynia and also for the practical work undertaken by the students, which consists mostly of surveys.
The School functions from mid-October through to the end of May. Classes are held once a week and are free of charge while attendance is voluntary
